History

According to archaeological research, Oklahoma was occupied by humans 30,000 years ago. The city came into existence on April 22, 1889, when approximately fifty thousand participants of the Land Run of 1889 claimed town lots and quarter sections in the area known as the Unassigned Lands. Thousands of settlers flocked to Oklahoma Station—later to be known as Oklahoma City—to establish homes and businesses in the area that spanned 400 acres. This became home to 5,000 people overnight. When the door to transportation for the community opened, the city became a crossroads for the nation. When two meatpacking plants chose to locate here in 1909 and 1910, the city began to grow at a steady rate.
